RM13mil ‘fake tea’ seized

KUALA LUMPUR: The hunt is on for a drug kingpin after police arrested two syndicate members and seized drugs worth more than RM13mil during two raids here.

Acting Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Deputy Comm Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali said the raids were conducted on April 14 at about 5.30pm, following around two months of surveillance.

“Two suspects were caught at a restaurant in Bandar Baru Seri Petaling in the first raid and following their arrest, a second raid was conducted at a house in the same area,” he said at a press conference in Bukit Aman, here yesterday.

Checks in the house showed that it had been converted into a storehouse, with 269 packets of drugs found inside.

A total of RM13.6mil worth of ketamine, syabu and Ecstasy were seized during the raid.

“It is believed that the drug syndicate stored their wares at the rented house before it went out to local and international markets.

“It is also believed that the drugs were brought in from overseas via illegal sea routes.”

DCP Mat Zani said the drugs were packaged to look like tea packets but checks showed that the brand used did not exist and had been conceived by the syndicate themselves.

Two cars were also seized during the second raid, which police believe had been used to transport the drugs.

He said the two suspects also paid around RM1,700 per month for rental and were believed to have been active since November 2024.

On the drug kingpin, DCP Mat Zani said it is believed that the mastermind is still at large and is currently in Thailand.

He added that investigations showed that both suspects were “hardcore” criminals.

“They were paid according to the drugs delivered on a per kg basis.

“Only if there is a request then will they deliver the drugs.

“Both men, aged 42 and 43, have been remanded until Monday.”

DCP Mat Zani said the department will never falter in cracking down on drug trafficking.

“Our challenges are aplenty but what I would like to stress is that the NCID works tirelessly in combating drugs.

“I don’t want the perception from the public to think that we only catch the small fish.”
