Toddler found drowned in swimming pool of Penang homestay

BALIK PULAU: A toddler was found drowned in the swimming pool of a homestay at Teluk Kumbar on Wednesday (April 16).

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the 2-year-old victim was found floating at the pool of the homestay at about 10.38pm.

"Investigations found that the boy's father had brought along three of his children, including the victim, to the homestay to meet his friend who was visiting from Kuala Lumpur.

"His wife, however, did not come along as she was working," he said in a statement on Thursday (April 17).

ACP Sazalee said at 10.15pm, the man's friend realised that his friend's youngest son was no longer in the room and immediately informed him to inquire about the child's whereabouts.

Alarmed by the situation, the victim's father and the friend quickly began searching for the child around the homestay area.

ACP Sazalee said the toddler was found floating in the homestay pool and was unconscious.

"The victim was rushed to Balik Pulau Hospital to seek treatment, however the doctor confirmed that the toddler has passed away," he said.

ACP Sazalee said the victim's body had been sent to the hospital's forensic unit for postmortem at 10am on Thursday and doctors confirmed that the toddler's death was caused by drowning.

The case has been classified under Section 31(1)(a) of Child Acts 2001.
