PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on an official working visit to Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday (April 17), says the Foreign Ministry.
Wisma Putra said the Prime Minister's visit comes following an invitation from Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra
This will be Anwar’s second official visit to Bangkok, with the first being in February 2023.
“Both Prime Ministers are expected to follow up on the outcome of the 7th Annual Consultation between Malaysia and Thailand, which was held in Putrajaya on Dec 16 last year,” Wisma Putra said in a statement Thursday.
It said both leaders will also evaluate the progress of bilateral relations and explore the potential for new cooperation between the countries, alongside holding discussions on regional and international issues.
According to Wisma Putra, Anwar is also scheduled to meet with the group of informal advisors to the Asean chair, which Malaysia is holding this year, as well as industry leaders from Thailand.
“The working visit is a continuation to the series of mutual visits carried out by the leadership of both countries alongside the telephone conversation between Anwar and Paetongtarn on March 6 this year,” it said.
“These engagements reflect the close ties and collaboration between Malaysia and Thailand as neighbouring countries and founding nations of Asean,” it said.
Wisma Putra also said Thailand is Malaysia’s seventh largest trading partner at the global level and the third biggest trading partner among Asean member countries last year, with trade amounting to RM114.56 bil.
Between January to February this year, two-way trade between the countries surpassed RM17.65bil compared to RM16.8 bil during the same period last year.
