MELAKA: A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman jogger at the Bukit Serindit Recreational Park here.
Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the suspect, from Jasin here, was detained at 12.05am on Friday (April 11) near the scene of the incident.
"The suspect was arrested in connection with a molestation case involving a 20-year-old woman who was jogging alone in the park at around 10pm on Thursday (April 10).
"An initial urine screening showed that the suspect was not under the influence of drugs,” he said.
DCP Dzulkhairi said the suspect has been remanded for four days until Monday (April 14) to help investigations under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
“The offence of outraging modesty carries a sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, or caning, or a fine, or any two of these punishments upon conviction,” he added.
A police source told The Star that the suspect grabbed the victim from behind and tried to drag her into some bushes before other joggers came to her aid and the man fled the scene.
Quick action by police from Bandar Hilir led to the suspect's arrest nearby, he added.
The recreational park, about 6km from the city centre, is Melaka's green lung and usually packed with joggers.
