Engineer loses half-a-million to investment scam in Johor

JOHOR BARU: An engineer lost more than RM500,000 after being scammed not once but twice by scammers in a bogus investment deal.

Deputy Seri Alam OCPD Supt Victor Genason said the 44-year-old male victim lodged a police report on Tuesday (April 8) claiming he suffered losses amounting to RM571,100 after being duped into investing in a stock investment scheme through WhatsApp that promised double profits.

“On Nov 30 last year, the victim received a WhatsApp message from an investment representative of Nuven Financial Community offering an investment opportunity that will make a quick profit in a short period.

"He then made 23 financial transactions into nine different bank accounts between Jan 22 this year until last Thursday (April 3) with a total amount of RM469,100.

“The victim was then told to make further payments to take out his supposed profits but unable to do so,” he said here on Thursday (April 10).

Supt Victor added that at the same time, on Dec 10 last year, the victim again received a message through WhatsApp, this time from a representative from PJT Partner Shock Academy that also promised him easy money through stock investment.

He said the victim then made nine financial transactions into four different bank accounts between Jan 9 and March 28 with a total amount of RM125,000.

“The victim again was told to make further payments to withdraw his profits but still failed to get his money before realising he had been cheated.

“Initial investigation carried out through Semak Mule found that seven out of the 13 bank accounts involved have 44 police reports lodged for investment scams,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Supt Victor added that the public should not be easily influenced by an unknown third party that promises quick profits and should always verify the matter with the relevant authorities.
