Defence Minister warns of 'global trade war' in wake of US tariffs

KOTA TINGGI: The United States' decision to impose tariffs on many countries, including Malaysia, will plunge the world into uncertainty and could lead to a global trade war, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said Malaysia now faces challenges and uncertainty after the United States' tariffs on its imports globally.

"We support the government's efforts to negotiate with the United States and there is a chance it will succeed because our good mutual relations," said Mohamed Khaled, who is also Kota Tinggi MP, at the Hari Raya open house at Dewan Jubli Sultan Ibrahim here on Monday (April 7).

He said that even if Malaysia managed to successfully negotiate with the US government, we would still face challenges as global trade would remain affected by tariffs imposed on other countries.

"The United States introduced the idea of free global trade and championed it – but it has now pulled back from the very system they introduced. That is why the world is in a state of uncertainty.

"It might lead to a global trade war – and we do not know what the outcome will be," he said.
