Outing turns tragic as one drowns at Johor waterfall

TANGKAK: An outing by three friends to a waterfall during the festive season turned tragic when one of them drowned after being swept away by strong currents.

However, two of the friends aged 24 and 27 managed to swim to safety during the incident on Monday (March 31).

Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Rifngat Hussein said the 27-year-old victim was found about 0.8km from the scene at the Asahan waterfalls in Jasin.

"We dispatched our personnel after receiving a call at about 5.36pm on Monday.

Initially, three of them had gone to the waterfall, but due to the sudden rise in water level, the three were swept away," he said, adding that two of them managed to swim to safety.

He added that the third victim was swept away by the strong currents and was discovered at about 9.15am the next day.

"We also had to wait for currents to ease before carrying out a search and rescue operation," he said.

A total of 22 personnel were involved in the operation.
