PETALING JAYA: It is that time of the year to file for your tax relief, and guess what – your digital subscription to The Star counts too!
Tax advisor Renganathan Kannan said Malaysians are eligible to claim tax relief when they purchase reading materials in both print and digital forms.
Falling under the Lifestyle Tax Relief category, he said a relief of up to RM2,500 is granted each year for a range of lifestyle expenses such as computers, smartphones or tablets, Internet subscriptions and fees for personal development courses.
He added that the relief for reading materials is not limited to newspapers but also includes books, journals and magazines.
“To qualify, taxpayers must retain receipts or invoices as proof of purchase and ensure that the publications are legally recognised.
“Each taxpayer can claim individually, meaning married couples filing separate tax returns can claim the benefit based on their respective spending, subject to a limit of RM2,500 each,” he said.
He advised taxpayers to organise their claims accordingly to maximise their benefits.
Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia treasurer-general Datuk Koong Lin Loong said the tax relief is a beneficial initiative to encourage people to increase their knowledge and literacy.
