Bomba: Install proper decorative lights to avoid hazards

PETALING JAYA: Install Hari Raya lights properly to prevent the risk of electric shocks and fires, says the Fire and Rescue Department.

Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad advised people to take precautionary measures when setting up light decorations at both homes and premises.

“Choose lights that adhere to national or international safety standards alongside those accredited by the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) or related bodies.

“Lights that do not adhere to safety standards can possibly cause fires,” he said.

Nor Hisham advised the public to check the condition of cables and extensions used, and avoid those that are broken or worn-out.

“Ensure that the cables are in good condition and not exposed to possible electric shock.

“Electrical wire connections should not be loose or in contact with hot surfaces.

“Avoid using lights excessively and do not overload the maximum recommended threshold on the electric sockets or extensions.

“Excessive use of lights can also cause short circuits or fires,” he said.

“Lights should be switched off when not in use to prevent overheating and to reduce the risk of short circuits.”

Nor Hisham said LED lights are a safer alternative, noting that these lights are energy-efficient and produce lower heat compared to incandescent or fluorescent lights.

“Perform periodic maintenance to ensure the lights and cables are in good condition.

“Blinking or malfunctioning lights must be replaced immediately,” he said.

He reminded business premises to ensure fire safety equipment like fire extinguishers, sprinklers or smoke detectors are functioning appropriately.

“This can help extinguish fires at an early stage before it spreads,” he said.

On a related matter, Nor Hisham said emergency response teams comprising department personnel will be stationed at selected locations along the North-South Expressway and East-Coast Expressway.

The teams will carry out patrols and act as first responders in the event of emergencies, as part of the department’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri safety operations.

The operation – Ops Selamat Kebangsaan – is coordinated by the police and will last from March 29 until April 3.

He said the Fire and Rescue Department will also conduct safety patrols at localities using fireworks as well as high-risk areas.

“Checks will also be done on homes whose owners have travelled back to their hometowns to ensure no fire risks,” he said.

He assured that all the department’s fire-fighting and rescue assets are functioning accordingly and ready for deployment throughout the festive season.

“We have also carried out public awareness campaigns among local communities.

“This includes advice on safety measures at home and on the road,” he said, adding that the department is also working with the police to ensure Op Selamat runs smoothly.

He reminded those playing with fireworks to always exert caution.

“Use it in open spaces and away from buildings. Do not let children use them without supervision.

“Maintain a safe distance from others and stay away once fireworks are lit,” he said, advising people to always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
