KUCHING: Grateful for a new lease of life, inmates released as part of the Madani Ihsan Licensed Prisoner Release Programme, in conjunction with Hari Raya, pledged to change their lives for the better.
They are also looking forward to reuniting with their families for the festive occasion.
Abdul (not his real name) said he was grateful to be granted an early release after serving four months of his 10-month sentence for a drug offence.
“It’s what I was hoping and praying for. I’m also thankful to be given a job at a cafe. I plan to prepare myself for the future and to do better after this,” he said upon his release from Puncak Borneo Prison, here on Monday.
He added that he was very glad to be able to celebrate Aidilfitri outside of prison.
Lila (not her real name), who had served 13 months, was also grateful to be released early.
“I’m deeply moved that I can celebrate Raya with my family,” she said.
Another female inmate was also glad to be released under the programme and given a job.
“I’m thankful to be able to meet my family and celebrate Raya together. I’m also glad to be employed upon release. I hope to change after this and not be influenced by others,” she said.
A total of 80 inmates were released in Sarawak under the programme, comprising 25 from Puncak Borneo Prison, 15 from Sri Aman Central Prison, 18 from Sibu Central Prison, two from Bintulu Correctional Centre, 14 from Miri Central Prison and six from Limbang Prison.
Sarawak Prisons director Teyun Thian Eim, who witnessed the release at Puncak Borneo Prison, said the inmates eligible for the programme were those who had received a sentence of three years and below, and had served one-third of their sentence.
He said the programme was carried out not just in conjunction with Hari Raya but on other festive occasions including Chinese New Year, Gawai and Christmas.
“Those selected for the programme have been given a second chance to turn over a new leaf,” said Teyun.
The Prisons Department had announced that 601 inmates from 34 centres nationwide would be released in conjunction with Hari Raya.
