KOTA KINABALU: A suspected drug transporter was arrested while carrying over 1kg of syabu, enough to potentially supply 5,000 drug users, in an operation at a residential area in Beverly Hills, Jalan Bundusan, on Sunday (March 23).
The 22-year-old suspect was detained at around 8pm by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Penampang District Police Headquarters.
Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said officers stopped the suspect and conducted a body search.
"During the inspection, the suspect handed over a black plastic bag he was holding. Inside, officers found a transparent packet containing another green packet labelled ‘Guanyinwang’.
"Further checks revealed another plastic packet filled with crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine, or syabu," he told reporters after the 218th Police Day Commemoration at the Penampang Police Headquarters on Tuesday (Mar 25).
Newton said the seized drugs weighed 1,014g and had an estimated street value of RM30,000.
"Investigations suggest the suspect was acting as a transporter, and the drugs were intended for distribution across Penampang, Papar, and Kota Kinabalu.
"The quantity seized had the potential to supply some 5,000 drug users," he added.
Urine tests confirmed the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with whipping upon conviction.
"Police will continue to intensify efforts to curb drug distribution and prevent such substances from reaching the streets," said Newton.
