Grassroots tour aims to boost entrepreneurship in Sabah's rural areas

KOTA KINABALU: The Borneo Grassroots Entrepreneurship Tour has been launched in Sabah to bring information on government business development programmes and the relevant support to rural areas.

The initiative by the Institute for Development Studies Sabah (IDS) and Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC) is not just to spread awareness but to bring real opportunities to underserved communities, said IDS chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramzah Dambul.

“By engaging face-to-face with local entrepreneurs, especially young women, we hope to break down barriers and provide practical solutions to common challenges such as limited access to funding, training, and business networks,” he said in a statement on Monday (March 24).

At the heart of the initiative is Dayang (Women Entrepreneurs Empowerment Initiative), a key programme under this year's state budget.

Dayang offers financing as well as mentorship and training in building sustainable and competitive businesses.

The Borneo Grassroots Entrepreneurship Tour is ongoing until April 3 and covers 10 districts: Papar, Sook, Kalabakan, Semporna, Lahad Datu, Beluran, Telupid, Ranau, Pitas and Tuaran.

In each location, IDS and SCC will host interactive sessions on knowledge sharing, discussions and direct engagement with at least 10 local young women entrepreneurs.

Ramzah stressed the importance of bridging the communication divide, adding: “Government policies are only effective when they reach the people they are meant to serve.

"Through this initiative, we are not just informing, we are listening, engaging, and ensuring that communities are not left behind.”

He said that by prioritising grassroots engagement, this programme also seeks to make government support more accessible and actionable, turning policy into progress.

Those keen to know more or participate in the programme can contact Chester Axton Balang at 011-25225029 or e-mail info@ids.org.my.
