Case of 17-year-old killed by suspected drunk driver awaiting forensic and chemistry report, police say

GEORGE TOWN: The case of a 17-year-old allegedly killed by a Vietnamese woman suspected of drink-driving in Jelutong has been referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions, Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad says.

He added that the forensic and chemistry reports from other departments required for the case would need time to prepare.

"The investigation papers of the case have been referred to the state DPP's office and the investigating officer has been given new instructions.

"Among them is to obtain the forensic report and chemistry report from other departments," he told reporters on Monday (March 24).

Comm Hamzah added that the suspect was not remanded after she was arrested as police had completed the investigation within 24 hours.

"The investigation team completed all processes against the woman within 24 hours after she was arrested and there is no need to apply for remand against her.

"An application for remand will only be made under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code if the police's investigation of an arrested person cannot be completed within 24 hours of the arrest," he said.

On Sunday, the family of Thomas Ch’ng Kai Hen, 17, had urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into their son’s death.

Thomas who was awaiting his Form Five examination results was killed at the scene when the drink-driving suspect ploughed into him and his friends who were walking along Jalan Jelutong on February 19.

His father Ch’ng Hock Soo, 54, said after more than a month of waiting, he was baffled that the suspect, who was allegedly intoxicated while driving, had not been charged yet.
