KOTA KINABALU: The Immigration Department has deported 220 Indonesians, including an infant, to Nunukan Island on the east coast of Kalimantan.

In the March 20 operation, the Indonesians were picked up from the Kota Kinabalu, Papar and Sandakan Immigration depot before being sent back to their country via a sea route.

Sabah Immigration director Datuk Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said those deported were aged from eight months to 67.

"Children involved were accompanied by their parents and guardians," she said in a statement on Friday (March 21).

So far this year, Sabah Immigration has sent home a total of 612 Indonesians, while the total number of people deported is 2,699, she said.

Sitti said only those who had served their sentence for any offences committed are deported.

They must also possess travel documents needed issued by the Indonesian Consulate-General before they are eligible for deportation, she said.

"Sabah Immigration will not hesitate to take action against anyone misusing visitors' passes as well as facilities provided by the state," she said, adding more crackdowns against illegal immigrants are being planned.
