Fire and Rescue Dept freezes leave for 11,500 staff ahead of Hari Raya ops

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department has frozen the leave of 70% of its staff or 11,500 personnel to ensure maximum emergency preparedness during the Aidilfitri festive season.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the remaining 30% will be allowed to take leave on a rotational basis, ensuring that operational strength remains sufficient to handle any emergencies.

"We want to ensure that our personnel are always at their optimal level, and we will continue working closely with the police.

"As the backbone of national rescue operations, the Fire and Rescue Department will fulfil its duty, with 11,500 personnel on standby 24 hours a day," he told a press conference after launching Ops Siaga Raya in conjunction with Aidilfitri 2025 from March 29 to April 3 here on Friday (March 21).

Regarding fire incidents, he expressed hope that Ops Siaga Raya would help reduce the number of fires typically reported during the festive season.

During last year’s Ops Siaga Raya, a total of 1,303 fire incidents were recorded, a 22% increase from the 1,068 cases reported in 2023.

"This year, we are aiming for a decline in fire incidents. Achieving this requires cooperation from all parties because safety is a shared responsibility.

"Before leaving for your hometowns, please ensure that all electrical switches at home are properly turned off," he said.

Meanwhile, Nga said the department will be stationed at 12 key locations along major highways in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, and Pahang as part of the police’s Ops Selamat 2025.

On a related note, he urged the public to refrain from playing with firecrackers and fireworks, especially after midnight, as it could pose safety risks and disrupt public order.

"Laws are in place to regulate the use of firecrackers. While we understand they add to the festive atmosphere, we urge everyone to be responsible and avoid causing disturbances, particularly after midnight," he said. - Bernama
