MELAKA: Muhammad Najmi Amzairy has taken the bold step of keeping his father’s kuih baulu-making business alive rather than letting it fade away.
The secondary school graduate’s father, who passed away in 2021, had supported the family for 24 years by making and selling baulu, a traditional treat often enjoyed during the Hari Raya season.
“After completing my formal education this year, I chose to take on the responsibility of running the family business with my cousin,” he said, referring to 28-year-old Arif Fathilah Othman.
“Both of us are now working together to ensure that our family’s legacy lives on,” said the 18-year-old when met in Melaka Pindah yesterday.
“Letting this business fade away would be a great loss, especially since we already have all the necessary equipment and I personally learned how to make baulu from my late father,” he said.
Muhammad Najmi said as Hari Raya approaches, demand for the fluffy treat doubles, providing an opportunity for both of them to generate additional income.
“To make our baulu more affordable, we have kept their prices lower than the market rate,” he said.
At present, the cousins only produce kuih baulu in its original flavour.
However, they plan to introduce new varieties such as coffee, pandan and strawberry in the future.
Currently, they can produce around 1,000 pieces of baulu per day.
“This business is more than just a source of income. It is a family legacy that must be preserved for future generations,” Muhammad Najmi added.
