Mukah cops arrest man for firing gun in public area


MUKAH: A 56-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly firing shots in a public area and possessing an unlicensed firearm in Maban, Balingian.

Mukah OCPD Deputy Supt Muhammad Alias said the police received a report from a 57-year-old woman who claimed she heard two gunshots while she and her child were fishing in a pond near the Maban River at around 4.30pm on Saturday (March 15).

"The woman said she saw a man holding a firearm and immediately ran for safety with her child," he said on Sunday (March 26).

A police team from Mukah conducted a raid at around 1am on March 16 and arrested the suspect in a house along the Maban River.

Police also seized a homemade gun, 15 rubber pellets and a bottle of alcohol.

The case is being investigated under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

The case is also being investigated under Section 39 of the same Act, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

The suspect has been remanded for four days until March 20.
