KOTA KINABALU: Authorities must step up patrols and take immediate action to locate and remove a crocodile spotted at Tanjung Aru Beach today to prevent potential harm, said Tanjung Aru assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong.
"I urge the relevant authorities to escalate their patrols and take necessary measures to capture the crocodile to prevent any potential harm," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 16).
He also advised the public to avoid water activities until authorities declared the area safe.
The Kota Kinabalu Civil Defence Department received a report of a crocodile sighting at Tanjung Aru Beach around 8.15am on Sunday and promptly raised red flags to warn the public against water activities.
"The visibility of crocodiles in our waters is alarming. I urge the Sabah Wildlife Department and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough search to identify potential breeding grounds to prevent an increase in the crocodile population," said Wong.
He said this initiative was essential for the safety of all beachgoers, not only at Tanjung Aru but also at Likas Bay and the prominent beach resorts nearby.
Meanwhile, Wong commended the Kota Kinabalu Civil Defence Department and beach personnel for their swift response in alerting the public.
"I appreciate the efforts of our beach rescue team and the Civil Defence Department for their prompt action in ensuring the safety of our beachgoers," he said.
Recent crocodile sightings have raised concerns about their presence in Kota Kinabalu waters. In May 2024, a viral video captured a crocodile in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, prompting Sabah Parks to enhance monitoring and install warning signs.
In October 2024, authorities ramped up patrols and public advisories, leading to a decline in sightings. However, the recent case at Tanjung Aru Beach suggests that crocodiles remain a concern in the area.
The Sabah Wildlife Department has been notified of the sighting.
