Cops seize RM27,000 worth of illicit fireworks, arrest one after Skudai shop raid


ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 53-year-old man with a prior criminal record has been arrested after police raided a shop in Taman Nusa Bestari, Skudai, and seized RM27,000 worth of fireworks and firecrackers.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said the arrest was conducted by a team from the Special Intelligence Unit and the General Operations Force Central Brigade in Cheras, Selangor, at around 4.15pm on March 12.

“The suspect, a local man, was detained at the premises. Initial checks revealed he had a previous criminal record, but his urine test came back negative for drugs,” he said in a statement here on Saturday (March 15).

ACP Kumarasan added that during the raid, police confiscated 134 boxes of various types of fireworks and firecrackers.

“The suspect has been remanded for four days from March 13 to 16 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to facilitate investigations,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 for unlawful possession of explosive materials.

If convicted, the suspect could face up to seven years in prison, a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both.
