PUTRAJAYA: There must be mutual respect in handling racial and religious matters as Malaysia continues to grapple with sensitivities despite 68 years of Independence, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president highlighted that issues concerning religion and race continue to surface, with some feeling their faiths are not being respected.
"In recent times, we have seen many incidents that touch on racial and religious sensitivities. Some claim that Islam is being disrespected, while others feel the same about Hinduism and other religions," he said in a video statement on Tuesday (March 11).
He said avoiding criticism of other faiths, even when one believes they have the facts, is essential in maintaining harmony.
"For me, if we truly respect other religions, we should refrain from making comments or criticisms, even if we believe we have facts to support our views," Dr Wee added.
He cautioned against mocking religious rituals, noting that what may be sacred to one faith could seem unusual to another.
He urged Malaysians to use Ramadan as an opportunity to strengthen interfaith harmony and promote unity through understanding and consideration for others.
