E-hailing driver loses over RM147,000 to social media investment scam

JOHOR BARU: A 65-year-old e-hailing driver lost more than RM147,000 after falling victim to an investment scam he discovered on social media.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak reported that the victim encountered an advertisement promoting a cryptocurrency investment on Facebook in October last year.

"The victim saw the post on Oct 20 last year and clicked on a link included in the post.

"He was later made to believe that he could enjoy good returns within a short period and decided to invest," he said in a statement.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi said the victim made a total of ten transactions amounting to RM147,604 to eight bank accounts between Nov 22 last year and Jan 6 this year.

"He was told to make more payments in order to receive his returns but failed to do so after realising he had been duped by scammers," he said.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi also noted that early investigations revealed a total of 27 police reports involving investment scams had been made against seven of the bank accounts the victim transferred money to.

"We urge the public to beware of such scams and to always check the authenticity of any investment opportunities offered to them," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
