Johor cops bust smuggling bid, seize 90 pig carcasses, lorry worth RM600,000 in total


JOHOR BARU: Police seized 90 pig carcasses and a lorry used to transport it, wortha total of RM600,000, at Jalan Kempas near here 3.42am Saturday (March 8).

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said police received a tip-off at 1.30am before conducting the operation with the Johor Veterinary Department.

“We also detained a 51-year-old local man believed to have brought the carcasses from a neighbouring country into Johor,’’ he said in a statement.

ACP Balveer said the suspect and the carcasses were handed over to the Veterinary Department for further action.

He said the case is being investigated under the Sub-rule 5(3) of the Animals (Control of Slaughter) Rules 2009 where no person can sell, display for sale, or possess an animal’s carcass that was not slaughtered at a licensed or approved abattoir.

ACP Balveer called upon those with information on crime-related activities to contact the Johor Baru North police district contingent at 07-556 3122.
