New baby hornbill takes first flight at Piasau Nature Reserve

SIBU: A male and female hornbill at Piasau Nature Reserve, Miri, are proud parents with their baby taking its first flight.

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has confirmed another successful nesting season for the Oriental Pied Hornbill (OPH) at PNR, following the fledging of Valentine and her chick.

"On March 5, 2025, at 2pm, an observation was conducted on the nest of Jimmy (male) and Valentine (female). This marked Jimmy’s first OPH nesting experience, with Valentine being his third mate.

"The pair entered the nesting cavity on Nov 29, 2024, and the fledging process was completed with Valentine leaving the nest on 3 March 3, followed by their chick at 3.30pm on March 4," said SFC on Facebook on Saturday (March 8).

SFC added that both Valentine and the chick are in a safe and healthy condition, signifying a positive outcome for the nesting period.

“With continuous conservation efforts, SFC aims to sustain the prestige of Sarawak’s permanent breeding areas for OPH, particularly within urban parks,” SFC stated.

The successful nesting of Jimmy and Valentine further highlights the importance of habitat preservation and conservation initiatives to support the long-term survival of Sarawak’s hornbill population.
