PETALING JAYA: Gig economy platform providers have welcomed the government’s move to refine the proposed legislation to improve workers' welfare.
In a joint statement on Tuesday (March 4), they said the move reflects the government’s commitment to an inclusive, consultative approach in shaping policies affecting gig workers and the digital economy.

“We appreciate the Human Resources Ministry’s willingness to engage with industry players and gig workers, ensuring the (proposed Gig Workers) Bill is practical, sustainable and aligned with the realities of gig work.
“This collaborative approach is a positive step toward protecting gig workers while fostering innovation, competition and opportunities for all,” the statement read.
The statement was issued by Bolt, FastGig, foodpanda, GoGet, Grab, Halo Delivery, Kiddocare, Lalamove and ShopeeFood.
The group also said it stands ready to support the government through meaningful dialogue, data sharing and pilot initiatives.

The providers reiterated the proposal to facilitate a feasibility and impact study as well as contribute to a regulatory sandbox.
“We remain fully committed in our long-standing partnership with the government to develop a balanced regulatory framework.
“As a thriving industry, we are not opposed to the Gig Workers Bill (but) are dedicated to ensuring that the policies and implementation are thoroughly considered and thoughtfully crafted.
"We recognise that fair treatment of gig workers is crucial for the industry as their well-being and satisfaction will ultimately create a thriving and innovative ecosystem,” they said.

On Monday (March 3), Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said his ministry will have further engagements with stakeholders before the Bill is tabled in Parliament.
He said this was part of efforts to ensure the Bill is “balanced and robust”.
Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim instructed Sim to examine stakeholders’ concerns regarding the Bill.
Gig workers have dismissed the platform providers' concerns as an attempt to delay its tabling.
The proposed law aims to introduce an official definition for gig workers, provide them with comprehensive social and financial protections, regulate terms and conditions of service agreements, and establish mechanisms for dispute resolution.
