Germany and Turkiye accepted as observer countries in ADMM, says Khaled

GEORGE TOWN: Germany and Turkiye have been officially accepted as observer countries in the Asean Defence Minister Meeting (ADMM), announced Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

He stated that both countries will be observers at the annual meeting from 2024 until 2027.

"As we are all aware, acceptance and decision-making for Asean requires consensus. Previously, several countries did not accept their application.

"However, we thank everyone and are grateful that under the leadership of Asean, Germany and Turkiye have been agreed to be included as observer countries in the meeting from 2024-2027," he said at a press conference after chairing the ADMM retreat at Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort on Wednesday (Feb 26).

Mohamed Khaled said the participation of Germany and Turkiye in ADMM will further enhance the existence of the ADMM as an open and inclusive regional security framework.

He added that their inclusion will provide new perspectives, views, and expertise in defence and security issues, contributing to the security and stability of the Asean region.

Regarding Timor Leste's participation as an observer country in the ADMM retreat, Mohamed Khaled said it offers exposure to Timor-Leste as part of the region.

He expressed confidence that through this participation, it will aid in capacity building for Timor Leste to be fully admitted as a member of ASEAN.
