Two nabbed over brawl at fighting tournament in Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM: Two men were detained in connection with a brawl during a mixed martial arts tournament at Dewan Besar Tanjung MBSA in Seksyen 19 here.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said a video of the incident went viral on social media.

"The incident occurred during a mixed martial arts tournament on Sunday (Feb 23).

"We received a report at about 2.11pm on Sunday, lodged by the organiser over the fight involving 15 supporters at the tournament.

"The fight started in the municipal hall and continued outside as well," he said in a statement on Monday (Feb 24).

He said the fight was caused by an argument between two contestants, who were disqualified by the organiser because their opponents did not show up.

"They were arguing with each other and dared each other to fight in the ring.

"The provocations from both men caused the situation to escalate until the supporters of each fighter fought each other and even threw chairs," he said.

ACP Mohd Iqbal said a 45-year-old fighter was hurt during the incident.

"He was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is currently in a stable condition," he said.

ACP Mohd Iqbal said the two fighters, the other aged 40, were detained at about 5.20pm on Sunday.

"Both suspects had multiple prior criminal records.

"They tested negative for drugs and have been remanded until Tuesday (Feb 25)," he said.

He said the investigation was being conducted under Section 148 and Section 324 of the Penal Code.

"We are still investigating whether any element of organised crime is involved in the incident.

"We urge those with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp Nawinthan Selvaraja at 016-2052314," he said.
