Tawau maritime zone records highest number of arrests last year

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducted 9,187 inspections and recorded 108 arrests for various offences in Tawau waters between January and December last year, the highest number of arrests among all maritime zones nationwide.

Tawau Maritime Zone director Maritime Captain Shahrizan Raman said the most common offences included the smuggling of controlled goods and illegal immigrants (PATI).

"The major offences are smuggling of controlled goods and PATI.

"We also have intelligence on cigarettes and drug smuggling and are working to obtain complete details to take further action.

"Throughout 2024, we recorded the highest number of arrests nationwide," he said during the Tawau Maritime Zone mini carnival, held in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the MMEA at Eastern Plaza, Tawau, on Wednesday (Feb 19).

Shahrizan said enforcement efforts led to the collection of RM2.5mil in compound fines last year.

"Some cases were brought to court, mainly involving violations under the Supply Control Act (AKB), as well as cases of individuals operating without permits or exceeding cargo limits,” he said.

He highlighted that Tawau Maritime Zone was among the top contributors to maritime law enforcement in Sabah.

“We were awarded the Admiral’s Cup for our achievements last year," he said.

So far this year, 543 inspections were carried out, leading to eight arrests in January.

“The majority of these cases involve violations under the AKB. Smuggling of cigarettes and drugs remains under close observation and we are working to gather more intelligence,” he said.

Currently, Tawau Maritime Zone operates two boats and one vessel, conducting daily patrols.

However, additional assets may be deployed ahead of Ramadan and Hari Raya periods to strengthen security.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, MMEA is collaborating with strategic partners, including the media, the Health Ministry and local banks to increase public awareness of maritime security.

A blood donation drive and free dental check-ups were also held for the local community during the carnival.

On Feb 22, there will be a boat ride programme, offering the public a chance to board MMEA vessels and experience a guided tour around Tawau waters, including a visit to an anchored MMEA ship.
