KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) received 11,139 complaints with elements of corruption involving civil servants between 2020 and 2024, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
According to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, the graft-buster opened 725 intelligence papers, 3,765 public investigation papers and 2,265 investigation papers from the complaints received.
“A total of 2,208 arrests were made with 1,070 charged and 493 sentenced,” she said in a parliamentary written reply on Wednesday (Feb 19).
V. Sivakumar (PH-Batu Gajah) had asked the government to state the effectiveness of the anti-corruption policy in the public sector, its impact on asset recovery, and new measures to be taken to ensure civil servants' integrity.
Azalina also said MACC forfeited over RM140mil in assets last year through investigation and legal action.
It froze RM14.36bil in asset value in 2020, followed by RM5.14bil in 2021, RM493.43mil in 2022 and RM8.11bil in 2023.
“The government is committed in its efforts to recover national assets, an important measure in curbing corruption.
“Within the last five years, MACC successfully took various legal measures including forfeiting assets gained through bribery and embezzlement,” she added.
She also said integrity unit chiefs had been appointed in every ministry to strengthen integrity and governance in the public sector.
She added that as of Dec 31, a total of 81 MACC officers were placed in the Public Integrity or Integrity and Governance units at government-linked companies.
