GOF foils bid to smuggle 88,000 coconuts

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) South-East Brigade foiled an attempt to smuggle nearly 88,000 coconuts after intercepting two trailer lorries at Stor Che Soh in Kampung Pulau Ular, Tumpat, on Monday (Feb 17).

Its commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said five local men aged 26 to 43, the lorry drivers and their assistants, were also arrested.

He said the arrests and seizure were carried out by members of the 7th Battalion at around 12.30pm during Ops Taring Wawasan at the location.

"The inspection found that nearly 88,000 coconuts were found in the lorries and the storage areas without valid purchase documents and licences.

"The estimated total value of the seizure amounted to RM2.13mil, including the vehicles, and the case is being investigated under the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Act 1965,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 19).

He said the suspects and seized items had been taken to Fama for further action. – Bernama
