Border control agency foils bid to smuggle 1,100 litres of diesel

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has foiled an attempt to smuggle out 1,100 litres of diesel through the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex.

It intercepted four modified Thailand-registered four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles within 10 hours, the agency said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 19).

First, its team stopped two vehicles at 8pm on Tuesday (Feb 18) and found they had been modified with extra tanks.

"At about 7am on Wednesday, another two vehicles were stopped for committing the same offences," it said.

All the vehicles were detained and seized for investigation under the Road Transport Act 1987, the statement added.

Summonses were also issued under Section 6(1) of the same Act against the drivers for failing to comply with regulations and endangering other road users.

The statement said the estimated value of the confiscated vehicles and diesel came to RM210,000.
