'Just a storm in a teacup': Steven Sim downplays heckling incident

PETALING JAYA: Steven Sim (pic) called for DAP party members to move on from the recent heckling incident during an event in the state.

“It was just a storm in a teacup, let us move on and move forward, together and stronger,” the Penang DAP chairman said in a Facebook post on Monday (Feb 17).

Previously, it was reported that Tan Khong Chong, who is the special assistant to Lim Guan Eng, had berated Sim at the end of an appreciation dinner in honour of party veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang.

In a video which has since gone viral, the man was heard yelling in Hokkien at first.

Standing just a few metres behind Sim, the man continued to heckle Sim and was then heard labelling him as “Fan Guat Zai” (traitor) in Cantonese.

Sim in the post said that Tan is an old friend and he has been a loyal DAP member.

“When I was appointed as Penang DAP chairman, I made the party’s unity as the core to serve the people of Penang.

“Therefore, I don’t want this issue affecting the unity of the party,” he added.

The dinner was to celebrate long-serving party leader Lim Kit Siang's 84th birthday on Feb 20.

The early celebration featured anecdotes and insights into his 60-year political career.

The dinner, attended by 950 guests including DAP leaders and supporters, highlighted Kit Siang's journey while celebrating his birthday.
