Sabah cops solved 81% cases despite increased crime rate in 2024


KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police remain dedicated to public safety, solving many crimes even though more cases were reported in 2024.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the force excelled in various areas, including crime resolution, drug enforcement, and traffic management, securing a strong national ranking.

He revealed that the state recorded 4,259 criminal cases in 2024, marking an increase of 3.52%, or 145 cases, compared to the previous year.

“However, Sabah ranked third in Malaysia with a 81.94% solving rate or 3,498 cases,” he said at their first assembly for 2025 at the Sabah Police Headquarters in Kepayan here.

The contingent also secured the highest charge rate in the country, with 6,129 cases (60.05%) prosecuted.

He added that the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department intensified efforts against drug-related offences, reporting 16,831 cases in 2024, a 14.5% increase from the 14,713 cases recorded in 2023.

“Arrests rose to 17,486 individuals, an increase of 12.8%, or 1,980 people. The number of cases prosecuted under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 also surged, achieving a 93.34% conviction rate. Drug seizures were valued at RM6.98mil, reflecting a continued clampdown on narcotics distribution in Sabah,” he said.

The state’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department opened 2,733 cases in 2024, up 10.5%, or 259 cases, from the previous year.

Despite the increase, the charge rate improved to 39.88%, surpassing the national Key Performance Index (KPI) of 35%.

Meanwhile, the state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department recorded 20,828 accidents, a 5.7% rise from 2023.

Over 201,000 summonses were issued, with a settlement rate of 32.99%, well above the 5% target.

Sabah also led Malaysia in traffic case resolutions, achieving 97.94% completion compared to the national KPI of 90%.

Sabah’s police contingent received national recognition for their efficiency in traffic investigations and prosecutions, with Asst Supt Jenuil Yasap named Malaysia’s Best Traffic Officer.

The contingent also secured the Best Accounting Management Recognition Certificate from the Home Ministry, reflecting excellence in administrative and operational efficiency.
