Lorry driver fined RM3,000 for obstructing JPJ officer


KANGAR: A lorry driver has been fined RM3,000 by a Magistrate's Court here for using abusive language on and preventing a Perlis Road Transport Department (JPJ) official from carrying out his duties last month.

Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim imposed the fine, in default eight months' jail, on Mohd Syukri Rejab, 29, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing a civil servant on Friday (Feb 14).

Syukri, from Tambung Tulang, was accused of committing the offence at Jalan Padang Telela-Pauh in Arau at 11.15am on Jan 15.

The charge, under Section 186 of the Penal Code, provides for a maximum prison sentence of two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the JPJ official was on patrol with two others when he stopped Syukri's lorry and asked him for his driver's licence and identity card.

Syukri was accused of refusing to cooperate and uttering abusive words at the official while taking out his mobile phone and recording the incident.

The prosecution was handled by DPP Tengku Ruqayyah Tengku Shahrom while Syukri was represented by Hasnor Arysha Hamdan from the National Legal Aid Foundation. – Bernama
