Govt agency to have bigger role in boosting English

PETALING JAYA: The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC), an agency under the Education Ministry, will soon see its role expanded as part of the government’s effort to improve English language proficiency nationwide, says the ministry.

The ELTC was established in June 2002 to undertake the specialist function of enhancing the teaching competencies of English language teachers.

“The ELTC’s role will be expanded to enhance English proficiency among both teachers and students,” the ministry said.

“This restructuring is expected to have a significant impact on improving teachers’ proficiency, particularly in terms of training and classroom teaching.”

The ministry’s response came after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged it to promptly implement initiatives to enhance English proficiency among students on Wednesday.

Anwar said this is due to complexities and bureaucracy involved in policy implementation in the current system. The ministry expressed appreciation for Anwar’s concern and said it will continue to work hard to reform the education system.

The ministry said it would continue to empower the English language through the four current key initiatives under the Malaysia Education Development Plan 2013-2025, namely the Highly Immersive Programme Dual Language Programme, Online English Language Skills Improvement Programme in Schools and Professional Upskilling of English Language Teachers.
