SUBANG: Local leaders of the Public Housing Projects (PPRs) must be the eyes of the local authorities to ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of amenities, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister made the call when announcing RM1.2mil to repair broken lifts at the Lembah Subang 1 PPR which is home to 12,000 residents.

"As the government, we can do it and if money is needed, we can provide it and if it is not enough, I can increase it.

"But what is needed is a high level of monitoring of these amenities by the respective committee and community.

"Both the authorities and respective communities will be able to help in this regard," he said at the Public Housing Project (PPR) in Lembah Subang 1 Forum on Thursday. (Feb 13).

There are 23 lifts operating at the Lembah Subang 1 PPR, of which three are not working.

Earlier, Anwar noted that the Madani government had for the first time since 1995, approved RM100mil in 2023 for lift repairs at the PPRs and RM185mil last year, bringing the total to RM285mil.

"There is a difference between this Madani government from previous administrations.

"The questions of the urban poor and rural and housing for the rakyat is given priority," he said.

On the issue of rent, Anwar said that the local authorities will impose a reasonable sum on PPR residents, including negotiating repayment of rental arrears.

Meanwhile, Anwar said that the PPR communities, which are composed of various races with differing religious beliefs, must be a showcase of unity rather than discord.

"There must be togetherness among the various races.

"Here, we have Malays, Indians and Chinese who live with the understanding of the different religious practices.

"There may be different religious beliefs but we must respect each other as humans," he said.

Earlier, Anwar visited Lembah Subang 1 Block D to view several renovated lifts initiated by residents themselves.

The entrance at the lift lobbies were renovated last year to resemble fancy hotel lobbies which went viral on social media.

Lembah Subang 1 comes under the Kita-Untuk-Kita (K2K) programme.

The K2K programme was announced by Anwar under the Budget 2023 to increase the liveability of public housing among the urban poor.

Also present were Housing and Local Government Minister Ng Kor Ming and Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.
