MACC nabs sports body senior officers for RM1.3mil false claims, power abuse

JOHOR BARU: A pair of senior office bearers of a sports association have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged abuse of power and submitting false claims involving over RM1.3mil.

According to a source, the two men, both in their 60s, were arrested at about 4pm on Wednesday (Feb 12) after giving their statements at the Johor MACC office.

"The first suspect, the president of the association, allegedly abused his power by instructing the honorary secretary to transfer part of a RM1.3mil sponsorship into his private account.

"The sponsorship, provided by the Youth and Sports Ministry and private entities, was intended for the association’s activities," said the source, adding that the offence was allegedly committed between 2023 and 2025.

The source added that the second suspect, the former honorary secretary of the association, allegedly submitted documents containing false details between 2024 and 2025.

"The suspect is believed to have submitted false documents regarding payments for training sessions amounting to about RM15,000 and a sports equipment subsidy totalling RM12,000.

"He allegedly submitted these documents to the Johor Sports Council, even though the programmes and supplies never materialised," the source added.

It was learnt that a five-day remand order until February 17, 2025, has been issued by Magistrate Muhammad Fitri Mokhtar, at the Johor Baru Magistrate Court on Thursday (Feb 13).

Meanwhile, Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias, when contacted, confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Sections 23 and 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
