Education Ministry eyes immediate measures to boost students' English proficiency

PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry is considering several immediate measures to ensure the effectiveness and impact of ongoing initiatives to strengthen English proficiency among students.

In a statement on Thursday (Feb 13), the ministry said it had taken note of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's suggestion to expedite the initiative.

"This aligns with the ministry's education reform agenda, which also focuses on dignifying the Malay language while strengthening English mastery," it said.

It also said that the role of English Language Teaching Centres (ELTC) would be expanded to enhance the English proficiency of teachers and students.

It added that the restructuring of ELTC was expected to improve teachers' proficiency, particularly in training and teaching in the classroom.

The Education Ministry said its focus on empowering English is concentrated on four main initiatives under the Malaysia Education Development Plan (PPPM) 2013-2025.

These include the Highly Immersive Programme (HIP), the Dual Language Programme (DLP), the Online English Language Skills Improvement Programme for Schools and the Professional Upskilling of English Language Teachers (Pro-ELT).

"The optimal use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Delima platform is now a major driver in improving English proficiency among students," it said.

The ministry also expressed appreciation for Anwar's concern over issues related to education. It said it would continue to work hard to reform the country's education system to improve the quality of national education.
