Sabah Umno denies talks of electoral pact

KOTA KINABALU: There was no discussion whatsoever on electoral pacts or seat distribution within Sabah Umno in its latest state committee meeting, says its state deputy chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

He said as the deputy chief of Sabah Umno, he does not know of any talks of possible pacts.

“In fact, we are still in the discussion stage between the state and federal party leadership on this matter,” he said on Tuesday (Feb 11).

Rahman said this in response to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar’s statement that a majority of the 25 Sabah Umno divisions are against an electoral pact with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said that as far as he was concerned, Sabah Umno was united, and discussions were held, with decisions to be made collectively.

As long as there is no final decision from the party, Sabah Umno would work towards strengthening the party, he added.

Regarding whether Sabah Umno was heading into state elections alone, Rahman said the rumour lacked basis.

“For me, going solo is not a viable option in Sabah, and parties must work with someone else,” he said.

However, given the dynamics of politics in Sabah and the constant change, Rahman said it was best to make a party decision on electoral pacts as soon as possible.

Rahman said people were tired and sick of politicians fighting all the time and they are more concerned about what politicians can do for the people.

He said Umno is a party of many talents, where its leaders held former ministerial positions and even the former Chief Minister’s post.
