Rescuers preparing their morning search operation.

KOTA KINABALU: A search is ongoing for a 16-year-old girl feared drowned in the Kota Belud district.

The girl was swimming in a river with her family near the Tan Chin Nam stone factory when they saw her struggling.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department officials said they received a distress call at around 3.58pm and arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later.

A search was immediately conducted, with firemen using rescue boats for surface searching, while other agencies, including the police and villagers, helped comb the riverbank.

Additional resources, such as the K9 unit, were brought in early on Monday (February 10) as the search for the victim continues.
