Penang to face scheduled water disruption in April

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has announced a scheduled water supply interruption (SWSI) affecting 337,000 consumers on both the mainland and the island

This is due to the RM8.7mil pipeline connection works in Seberang Perai.

PBAPP is preparing to carry out the final connection works (Phase 1) of the Sungai River–Crossing Pipeline (SP–RCP) section at Ampang Jajar of Central Seberang Perai on April 25, after the Hari Raya celebrations.

Its chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan said once completed, the 1.35m pipeline would support a maximum treated water pumping capacity of 247MLD.

"It will enable safer and more efficient pumping of a higher volume of treated water from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to meet future water demand on the mainland and Penang island (via twin submarine pipelines)," he said in a statement on Monday (Feb 10).

The new pipeline, laid about 5m above the surface of Sungai Perai, will replace two temporary 600mm pipelines currently laid along the Ampang Jajar vehicular bridge.

Pathmanathan said as of Feb 1, the project had reached the 70% completion mark and is progressing as scheduled.

He said SWSI would involve five districts including the majority of industrial water consumers in Bayan Lepas, Perai, Bukit Minyak and Batu Kawan.

"The temporary shutdown of sections of the SPU-SPT pipeline will cause a 24 to 48-hour water supply disruption," Pathmanathan explained.

Pathmanathan, however, said the actual dates and times are subject to the completion of all the necessary preparatory site works.

A map of the affected areas with more specific details, updates on site works and reminders to store water in March and April, would be provided ahead of the SWSI implementation.
