Potholes near Bundusan Plaza are accidents waiting to happen.
KOTA KINABALU: Consumers in the state, particularly in the Penampang district, are demanding accountability as road maintenance concessionaires continue to ignore their responsibility to fix severe potholes.
Their frustration has intensified following a tragic accident in which a motorcyclist lost his life after hitting a pothole in the area.
National Consumer Foundation Sabah president David Chan criticised the contractors for failing to carry out the work they were entrusted with, leaving road users to suffer the consequences.
“These concessionaires were given the responsibility to maintain our roads, yet they have failed to do what is expected of them. Their inaction is not only frustrating but also dangerous,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 9).
Chan also questioned the role of enforcement agencies, including the Works Ministry and Sabah’s Public Works Department, in holding these contractors accountable.
"How can they not see the worsening road conditions? Or have they simply chosen to ignore the problem while motorists continue to risk their safety?" he asked.
The recent fatal accident has heightened concerns over the dangers posed by these neglected road conditions.
The victim, a local motorcyclist, reportedly lost control of his bike after hitting a deep pothole, leading to his death.
"The potholes near Bundusan Plaza are not just an inconvenience, they are accidents waiting to happen," Chan warned.
He urged authorities to take immediate action, stressing that every delay increases the risk to motorists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.
