Stay off booze, stay calm during Ipoh Thaipusam celebrations, police warn

IPOH: Those who consume alcohol and create public disorder during the three-day Ipoh Thaipusam celebration will be arrested, police warn.

Acting Perak police chief Deputy Comm Zulkafli Sariaat said even those caught drinking and driving, and endangering the safety of others will be nabbed.

He said police would take action against those caught fighting, creating a scene, or inciting provocation during the event.

“We will be monitoring the situation, and also looking out for stalls selling alcohol which is not allowed,” he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here on Friday (Feb 7).

DCP Zulkafli said the police would be monitoring the traffic, routes and public safety throughout the three-day event.

On Thursday (Feb 6) Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said the Perak government would enforce a strict three-day ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol during the Ipoh Thaipusam celebration, with violators facing potential legal action in court.

He said the ban would be imposed from February 10 to 12 along the Thaipusam chariot procession routes, temporary traders’ tents and the area surrounding the Kallumalai Arulmigu Subramaniar Temple in Gunung Cheroh here.
