QuickCheck: Are the 'special electricity bill discounts' on social media genuine?

IN AN age where social media is flooded with enticing offers, a recent trend involving electricity bill discounts has sparked curiosity.

Many users have encountered these offers and wondered about their authenticity.

Are these discount offers on electricity bills actually genuine?

Verdict:

FALSE

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has issued a warning to the public about scams involving fake discounts on electricity bills.

These scams have been spreading widely across various platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok.

In a post shared on their official Facebook account on Thursday (Feb 7), TNB highlighted that these offers, regardless of their form, are not legitimate.

The post, titled "Beware of Electricity Bill Discount Scams," advised the public to remain vigilant and recognise the warning signs of these fraudulent schemes.

Scammers often request payments in cash or via bank transfers to individual accounts, under the guise of offering bill discounts.

They might also send out suspicious advertisements or promotions through social media channels.

TNB pointed out that these scammers might contact individuals through social media, phone calls, emails, or even in person.

Their tactics include offering fake discounts for bill payments, demanding payments to avoid electricity disconnection, providing illegal services like meter tampering, and selling uncertified energy-saving devices that falsely claim to reduce electricity bills.

To protect consumers, TNB encouraged its customers to stay informed and cautious, directing them to their website for more details on scam prevention.
