Kuching man nabbed for possession of contraband cigarettes and beer worth RM724,570


SIBU: A man in Kuching has been arrested for possessing contraband cigarettes and beer worth RM724,570.

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 commander ACP Ab Rahman Mat Hasan said at around 11am on Feb 6, acting on information received while conducting Ops Taring Landai, a team from the Marine Intelligence Unit PPM W5 arrested a local man and inspected a business premises at 10th Mile Bazaar, Jalan Penrissen, Kota Padawan.

“During the inspection, various alcoholic beverages and different types of cigarettes were found without tax stamps or duty-paid stickers from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department,” he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 7).

The man is suspected of committing the offence under the Customs Act 1967. The contraband items were also confiscated for further investigation.

ACP Ab Rahman said the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries a fine of up to RM500,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both upon conviction.
