Sabah and Sarawak floods to be debated in Parliament's Special Chamber today

KUALA LUMPUR: An emergency motion to discuss the ongoing floods and landslides in Sarawak and Sabah will be debated in Parliament’s Special Chamber, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor said the motion filed by Chiew Choon Man (PH-Miri) under Standing Order 18(1) satisfied three conditions.

“The motion satisfied the conditions which are specific, of public interest, and urgent.

“Following consideration by the Speaker, the motion will be debated in the Special Chamber at 2.30pm today,” Ramli told the august House on Wednesday (Feb 5).

Chiew said the motion was necessary as the disasters had affected many people in the two states and would have implications, especially economically.

“This crisis displaced thousands of people and many lost their incomes.

“The motion also urges the relevant ministries to explain the short- and long-term plans to support the victims,” he said when reading out the motion earlier.

It was reported that the Fire and Rescue Department has carried out 143 rescue operations in flood-hit areas of the Bornean states.

Its deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Ahmad Izram Osman said 2,681 victims were rescued in 62 operations in Sarawak, while 1,325 victims were saved in 81 operations in Sabah.
