Man marks potholes to warn motorists in KK

KOTA KINABALU: A man has taken proactive steps by painting white squares around potholes on major roads to alert motorists.

Social media user Kratos Ragnarok shared photos of the marked potholes along Kepayan, Moyog, Lintas and Penampang roads on Facebook, expressing frustration over the lack of action from authorities.

His initiative followed a Feb 3 fatal accident in which a motorcyclist died after hitting a pothole in Kepayan.

"Recently, a tragic incident occurred, claiming the life of an innocent person. May his soul rest in peace," he wrote.

He criticised local councillors from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Sabah Pakatan Harapan for failing to pressure the Public Works Department (JKR) to repair the roads.

In a bid to prevent further accidents, he started marking the potholes with white paint.

"We deserve better and safer roads in Sabah," he said.

This is not the first time frustrated road users have taken drastic measures.

Last year, Mahathir Aripin planted banana trees in potholes on Jalan Sandakan–Lahad Datu.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said road repairs had started in several areas following public complaints.

"We have instructed JKR engineers and relevant concession companies to take more proactive and timely measures.

"I was updated this morning that additional teams have been deployed to speed up the works," said Shahelmey, who is also Sabah Works Minister, when contacted on Wednesday (Feb 3).
