JOHOR BARU: The construction of 107 high-tech telecommunication towers in Johor marks a significant milestone under phase one of the National Digital Network (Jendela) initiative, says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Its Johor director Nurzie Ibrahim said of the 107 towers, 91 are fully operational while the remaining 16 are expected to be operating in phases by the third quarter of this year.

“With cutting-edge infrastructure and top-tier services, we can strengthen our nation’s global standing.

“The success of this project would not have been possible without the dedication of all stakeholders, including professional consultants who worked tirelessly to ensure the completion of the telecommunication towers across Johor,” she said in a speech at the handover ceremony of the phase one towers at a hotel here yesterday.

She added that the towers were constructed in the fourth quarter of 2024, which is within the stipulated timeframe.

“They play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity in the state,” she said.

Nurzie emphasised that telecommunications are the backbone of economic and social progress.

“With advancing technology, we can connect communities, accelerate information dissemination, and improve the people’s quality of life.

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure the continuous growth of this sector will benefit all segments of society,” she said.

The Jendela phase one towers are located in Kulai (two), Johor Baru (four), Tangkak (seven), Muar (eight), Batu Pahat (nine), Segamat (10), Kluang (11), Pontian (12), Mersing (22) and Kota Tinggi (22).

Nurzie said the completion of these towers is expected to significantly enhance digital accessibility and connectivity across Johor, supporting the broader objectives of Malaysia’s digital transformation agenda.

She said the achievement is a collaborative effort of Theta Telecoms Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Theta Edge Bhd, in partnership with Bullish Aim Sdn Bhd, Konsortium Jaringan Selangor Sdn Bhd as well as TP Works Engineering Sdn Bhd.

Konsortium Jaringan Selangor Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Ahmad Fahman Ismail Hadi Tang said digital transformation plays an important role in driving economic evolution and national progress.

“The mastery of digital transformation plays a crucial role in propelling economic evolution and national renewal.

“It serves as the starting point for the era of digital transformation and has undeniably reshaped cultures into more competitive, sophisticated, and advanced forms,” he said.

He also expressed his confidence that the newly built telecommunication towers would benefit the community and help bridge the digital divide.
