Slight increase in violent crimes last year

KUALA LUMPUR: Index crimes that involved violent offences have seen a slight increase last year, according to Bukit Aman statistics.

According to Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID), those listed as index crimes were murder, rape, robbery with and without firearms, gang robbery with and without firearms, and causing hurt.

CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said a total 11,067 cases were recorded last year, which showed an increase of 614 cases compared to 2023.

“While recorded murder cases had dropped to 236 cases from 258 cases, gang robbery with firearms had showed a slight increase with three additional cases in 2024 equalling to 33 in total.

“Causing hurt cases encompass cases under Section 147, 323 and 324 of the Penal Code. That showed an increase of 21.4%,” he said during a special briefing on Monday in Bukit Aman.

Non-index crimes involving property offences such as vehicle theft and house break-ins also saw an increase, with a total of 47,188 cases in 2024. This is an increase of 5,197 cases from 2023, he said.

“In terms of different states, only Kedah and Selangor saw a reduction in index crimes.

“Kedah saw a drop of 491 cases whereas Selangor saw a reduction by 1,829 cases.

“Both the non-index crimes for Perlis and Penang showed a drop, with a reduction of 49 and 554 cases respectively,” he said.
