Man arrested for stealing mobile phone from disabled shop worker


MARANG: A man suspected of stealing a mobile phone from a physically disabled shop worker at a grocery store in Rhu Rendang, which went viral on social media, was arrested on Wednesday.

Marang District Police Chief Supt Mohd Sofian Redzuan said the 29-year-old man was apprehended at a house in Taman Batin Perdana, Kuala Terengganu.

Officers from the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) of the Marang District Police Headquarters (IPD) and IPD Kuala Terengganu detained him.

"The incident occurred last Tuesday when the suspect came to a shop in Marang to buy cigarettes. The man returned 15 minutes later to inquire about mobile prepaid top-ups,” he said.

"Following that, the next day, police officers successfully detained the suspect at a house in Taman Batin Perdana, Kuala Terengganu," added Supt Mohd Sofian when

contacted by Sinar Harian on Sunday (Jan 26).

Previously, a 27-second video showing the suspect stealing a mobile phone from an disabled shop worker and fleeing the scene in Rhu Rendang, Marang, went viral on the Malaysian Crime Watch - MyWatch Facebook page.

"This case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code," he added.
