KUALA LUMPUR: More than 9,700 police officers and personnel will be deployed for the 186 meetings that will be held in the city and Putrajaya in conjunction with Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the meetings, involving local and foreign delegates, are expected in April, May and October.
“Twenty-one of those meetings will be held in Putrajaya, with the police playing an important part in ensuring safety and security.
“One of our primary focuses will be on traffic control to ensure the proceedings run smoothly,” he told a press conference after attending the KL police monthly assembly here yesterday.
Comm Rusdi said KL police will request additional personnel from Bukit Aman and other contingents should the need arise.
“We have made ample preparations as all eyes will be on the country. We will make sure the nation’s positive image is preserved,” he added.
On another matter, Comm Rusdi said police believe two people were responsible for splashing red paint at the doors of the KK Mart outlet at Universiti Malaya (UM) on Jan 21.
“CCTV footage showed the duo arriving near the outlet on a motorcycle on the day of the incident. We are in the midst of identifying them and appeal to those with information to contact the police as soon as possible,” he said.
UM has filed a police report following the paint splashing incident.
“UM takes the paint-splashing incident at the KK Mart premises on campus very seriously,” said the university in a statement on Jan 22.
Meanwhile, on another case, Comm Rusdi said the police inquiry paper (KEP) in connection with 182 police reports lodged against Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) on Jan 10.
The police reports were lodged over Yeoh’s book titled Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey.
“We have referred the matter to the AGC and we are waiting for a decision from them on further action to be taken.
“A KEP can be converted to an investigation paper at any time if there is any offence committed” he said.
A total of 182 police reports have been lodged against the Segambut MP over her book, with the police having recorded statements of 59 individuals related to the investigation.
Previously, an NGO had called for Yeoh to resign from her Cabinet post after the Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed a defamation suit filed by the Segambut MP against former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan over remarks he made during a forum at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) four years ago.
On another matter, Comm Rusdi said the investigation paper involving a policeman who allegedly made an obscene gesture towards a woman during a protest last month has been submitted to the AGC as well.
He said the policeman, who is stationed in Wangsa Maju, is still on duty pending a decision by the AGC.
“We will take appropriate action once we have received further instructions from the AGC on the matter,” he said.
